OUR GOAL

The aim of GlobalStep Games Academy is to give students the equivalent of a years’ experience in the QA testing field. This is achieved through our 9-week intensive QA testers course in which our students test a variety of different genres of games on the latest games consoles, mobile devices and computers.

In this time the students are taught a variety of QA processes and methods that are commonly used in the industry. We achieve this through the teachings of our industry professional tutors, teaching our students the necessary skills required through the use of pre-released projects from our clients.

See what industry professionals are saying about our games testing academy in this short video.

A NEW WAY TO LEARN

We are not a “traditional” educational establishment, our environment is real: GlobalStep is a world leader in risk management and mitigation in the development, production, and maintenance of video games throughout their life-cycle.

The company provides quality assurance, localization, live operations support, data analytics, test automation and consulting services to its global customer base ranging from small and medium-sized enterprises to Fortune 100 companies. In addition to its head office in Dallas, GlobalStep has regional offices in North America, Europe, and Asia.

COURSE CONTENT

Our students will gain experience in using developer tools, understanding the terminology that is used, working through different types of testing, learning about different bug types and understanding what it is like to work in a real QA testing environment. These skills are learnt through a variety of online course content, practical work, quiz work, exams and working on real projects with real test leads and developers.

Throughout the first 4 weeks the GlobalStep Games Academy aims to teach students the processes and skills required to work within Quality Assurance. In the remaining weeks, we focus on advanced QA processes, Curriculum Vitae documents, interview advice and avenues students can follow to take their first steps into the wider games industry.

Console Testing

Learn how to use platform-specific debugging tools on the latest generation of games consoles.

Mobile Testing

Learn how to use Android Debug Bridge and Xcode for mobile applications.

Website Testing

Discover how to use developer tools to identify errors when testing web applications.

VR Testing

Learn testing methods using a range of Virtual Reality headsets.

FUTURE EMPLOYMENT

With GlobalStep now established in the UK, we plan on expanding our operations, aiming to add 100 QA contractors to the UK base by the end of the year. Because of this, there is a strong possibility of our students working within the company straight after the course. From here, we promote our former students to look for other work in the industry whilst gaining more experience at our UK facility.

So far, we have taken on 100% of our students after the course has finished. This has led to jobs with other developers after just a few months of working with us at GlobalStep. Take a look at some of our partnered developers who offer work experience for our students!

WORK WITH REAL GAME STUDIOS

In week 5 of the course, we work on a developer’s game that is currently in production, working on tasks that the developers require of us. This is treated as a professional week where the students work in a real testing environment.

We also have a second week of work experience which happens on week 7, this is where our students get the chance to work with our experienced QA team, or the chance to work with local games companies at their studio’s. We have worked with Two Point, 22cans, Wonderstruck games, and other developers in this work experience week, and have had some amazing feedback.

“Lewis was great to have here, he gave us some invaluable feedback on the game flow from a new user perspective and found a lot of issues ranging from minor text to major functionality. He’s clearly very passionate about the games industry, and it shows with his work ethic. Honestly, there’s really no negative feedback I could put here, if you told me he’d been testing for a year, I’d believe you.”

Mark Steggall - QA Manager, Wonderstruck Games

“It’s been great having Joe in the studio this week! We are only 3 weeks until master now, so it is a very busy time for us and Joe got stuck right in helping out with giving feedback balancing, and has been entering some bugs via our internal bug database. He picked everything up no problem and has been confident and professional working with the team. It’s been a pleasure having him in the office and we hope that he had a good week, and found it beneficial to his learning :)”

Jo Kheller - Producer, Two Point Studios

“Overall Jake has been very useful and I’m happy with his performance. He was able to follow direction easily and get through the test plans / passes with minimal supervision. The tasks were also done thoroughly and efficiently.”

Dzan Wong - QA Manager, 22cans

“Jacob did an excellent job. He integrated with the team well, got his head around the game he was on fast (even though it wasn’t similar to games he would typically play), and productively contributed bug reports in a useful format. It was very useful to have him in the office.”

Matthew Wiggins - Founder, Mojiworks
